Pemerintah Provinsi (Pemprov) Kalimantan Utara (Kaltara) memberikan atensi serius terhadap pengembangan Geological Park (Geopark) Gunung Batu Benau di Kecamatan Tanjung Palas Timur, Kabupaten Bulungan.
Upaya serius ini terungkap saat Gubernur Kaltara, Drs H Zainal A Paliwang, SH, M.Hum beraudiensi bersama Menteri Energi Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) RI, Ir Arifin Tasrif di Jakarta, Kamis (9/2/2023).
Hadir mendampingi Menteri ESDM, Plt. Kepala Badan Geologi Kementerian ESDM Dr. Ir. Muhammad Wafid AN, M.Sc
Dikatakan gubernur, pertemuan itu menjadi tindaklanjut kerjasama pengembangan Geopark Gunung Batu Benau seluas 2.000 hektare antara Pemprov Kaltara dengan Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN).
“Saya sudah pernah bermalam di dalam goa Gunung Batu Benau, dan di dalam goa sangat luas sekali dan berdekatan dengan sungai yang memiliki arum jeram yang berbatu-batu,” ujar Gubernur Zainal di Ruang Rapat Kementerian ESDM.
Geopark merupakan sebuah wilayah geografi tunggal atau gabungan yang memiliki Situs Warisan Geologi (Geosite) dan bentang alam yang bernilai, terkait aspek Warisan Geologi, Keragaman Geologi, Keanekaragaman Hayati, dan Keanekaragaman Budaya.
Uniknyq, kata Gubernur, Gunung Batu Benau memiliki ciri khas yang tidak ditemukan di tempat lain. Misalnya, masih dihuni oleh penduduk asli masyarakat Adat Punan Batu Benau. “Mereka masih memiliki DNA tersendiri karena belum bercampur baur dengan masyarakat umum lainnya,”terang Gubernur.
Untuk itu, Gubernur Zainal bersama tim akan terus berkoordinasi dengan Kementerian ESDM untuk membantu mengevaluasi hasil kajian identifikasi keunikan bentang alam, rekonstruksi proses geologi, struktur batuan, keberadaan fosil hingga kandungan mineral dan jenis batuan yang terdapat di Gunung Benau.
“Besar harapan kami supaya Gunung Batu Benau dapat segera ditetapkan sebagai Geopark, dan akan menjadi Geopark pertama di Kaltara,” tuntasnya.
Turut hadir dalam rombongan Gubernur, Plt. Kadis ESDM Provinsi Kaltara R. Adi Hernadi Ismail Syah, ST., Anjelita Malik (Senior Manager, External Affair, YKAN Jakarta), Karo Adpim Jaini, S.Hut., MP dan Datu Yaser Arafat.
